What Is a Soul Tie? Signs & How to Release One

By Chanchaol Sehrawat•

You deleted their number in January. By March, you caught yourself typing a message you'd never send, just to feel close to them for a second.

It's been months since you last spoke. Maybe longer. But some part of you still feels like it's wearing their hoodie.

If that lands a little too close, you may be dealing with what's often called a soul tie: a lingering bond to someone that time alone hasn't untangled.

What Is a Soul Tie?

The term shows up across different traditions, from Christian teachings on bonds formed through intimacy and commitment, to newer energy-work language that treats every close relationship as an exchange between two people.

Strip away the terminology and the idea is simple: when you bond closely with someone, physically, emotionally, or over a long shared history, that connection doesn't vanish the moment the relationship ends. For some people it's just a fond memory. For others, it's a pull that's hard to explain and even harder to shake.

A soul tie isn't something science can measure. It's a belief and a metaphor, useful because it names something a lot of people feel but struggle to put into words.

The Different Types of Soul Ties

Not all soul ties form the same way, and naming the type you're dealing with usually makes it easier to address.

  • Romantic soul ties are the most intense, formed through physical and emotional intimacy with a partner.
  • Family soul ties form early and run deep, which is why some of the hardest ties to untangle are with a parent or sibling, not an ex.
  • Friendship soul ties can be just as binding as romantic ones, especially a close friendship that ended badly or without closure.
  • Trauma-bonded soul ties form in relationships that cycled between affection and harm. These are usually the ones that feel the most confusing to let go of, because part of you misses the good moments even while another part of you knows the relationship hurt you.
  • Karmic soul ties, in the spiritual framing I use in my sessions, are connections believed to carry a lesson from a past life.

Why a Soul Tie Can Feel Like Withdrawal

There's a real process happening underneath that feeling, even if you don't believe in energetic cords.

Close contact with someone we love builds attachment over time, partly through bonding hormones like oxytocin. When that contact stops, your body doesn't adjust instantly. Research on romantic rejection has found it can activate some of the same brain regions involved in physical pain and craving, which is part of why heartbreak comes with real physical symptoms: a tight chest, poor sleep, low appetite, a constant hum of anxiety.

None of that means you're weak or doing grief wrong. It means your nervous system formed a genuine attachment, and recalibrating takes time, and often active work.

If you feel afraid, controlled, or unsafe around this person, please reach out to a domestic abuse helpline or emergency services in your country. Your safety always comes first.

Signs You May Have an Unhealthy Soul Tie

  • You think about them multiple times a day, even years after things ended
  • You compare every new partner to them, and no one measures up
  • You feel a physical reaction, a knot in your stomach, a tight chest, when you see their name or a reminder of them
  • You've checked their social media, or had a friend check it for you, more times than you'd like to admit
  • Being around them, even briefly, leaves you emotionally drained for days
  • You catch yourself making small decisions, what you wear, where you go, with them in mind, even though they're not part of your life
  • Revisiting old messages or photos gives you a brief lift followed by a longer low
  • You feel strangely guilty or disloyal at the thought of fully moving on
  • You've noticed the same dynamic repeating with new partners, as if you're still trying to finish something that started with them

Healthy Soul Ties vs. Unhealthy Ones

Not every soul tie needs cutting. A strong bond with a partner, a close friend, or even an ex you've made peace with isn't automatically unhealthy. The difference usually isn't how deep the connection is, it's whether it still leaves room for you. A healthy tie lets you think of someone fondly and still feel whole. An unhealthy one keeps a piece of your attention, your self-worth, or your decisions anchored to someone who isn't actively part of your life anymore.

How to Begin Releasing a Soul Tie

  1. Name what you're carrying. Write down, plainly, what you're still holding onto: a promise, a memory, a future you'd pictured together.
  2. Create real distance. No-contact is usually the fastest way to let your nervous system reset. If full no-contact isn't possible, mute or unfollow.
  3. Let your body catch up. Movement, breathwork, time outdoors, and time with grounding people all regulate your nervous system faster than thinking your way out ever will.
  4. Grieve the specific thing you lost. Not the relationship in the abstract, the exact mornings, in-jokes, or plans you miss. Vague grief lingers; naming it tends to move.
  5. Rebuild a life that doesn't orbit them. Soul ties often stay strong simply because so much of your routine was built around the other person. New habits, new regular places, new people, give your attention somewhere else to live.
  6. Mark the release, deliberately. Some people write a letter they never send and burn it. Others use a guided cord-cutting meditation. The ritual isn't magic, it's a clear signal to your mind that this chapter is closed.

How to Release a Soul Tie With a Cord-Cutting Session

Steps four through six are where most people get stuck on their own, especially when the tie feels older than the relationship itself, like an old pattern you can't quite trace.

That's the work I do in Past Life Regression and Akashic Records sessions at Soul Healing Path. Over a private Zoom session, I guide you into a relaxed, meditative state, help you name what you're still carrying, and lead you through a guided cord-cutting visualization to release it.

These sessions are a spiritual, reflective practice. They sit alongside therapy, not in place of it, especially if you're healing from a difficult or abusive relationship.

Soul Ties: Frequently Asked Questions

Is a soul tie real?

There's no scientific evidence for an energetic cord between two people. What's real is the attachment your brain and body form to someone close to you, which is why feeling "tied" to someone can be so convincing.

How long does it take to break a soul tie?

It varies. Full no-contact plus active grieving brings real relief within a few months for many people, though longer or more complicated relationships can take more time. There's no fixed timeline, and that's normal.

Can you have a soul tie with someone you were never officially with?

Yes. Some of the strongest ties form around undefined relationships, a situationship, an affair, a connection that ended before it was ever named, because the lack of closure gives the mind more to hold onto.

Is a soul tie the same as a karmic relationship?

They overlap. A karmic relationship is a connection believed to carry a lesson from a past life. A soul tie is the lingering bond itself. Not every soul tie is karmic, but a karmic relationship nearly always leaves one.

Can a soul tie exist outside of a romantic relationship?

Yes. Some of the deepest soul ties form with a parent, a sibling, or a close friend, and those can be just as hard to untangle as a romantic one.

Can a soul tie be positive?

Yes. A soul tie isn't inherently bad, it just means two people formed a real bond. The ones worth releasing are the ones that still cost you something today.

You're Allowed to Let Go

A soul tie doesn't mean you're broken, cursed, or incapable of moving on. It means you loved, or bonded, in a way that mattered. Untangling it is possible, and you don't have to do it by staring at your phone waiting for them to text back.

If you're ready to name what you're still carrying and release it with intention, I'd be glad to help.
